After what feels like 3000 days of winter, we can finally say… hello spring.
The thing about spring in Cornwall is that everything just gets better. The days stretch out a little longer, the temperature creeps up and most importantly, our old friend the sun, who we’re fairly sure hasn’t been seen for months, slowly makes her return.
And with that return, we can finally say a not-so-sad goodbye to a few things.
Goodbye 6mm wetsuits.
Goodbye stinky wetsuit boots.
Goodbye gloves.
Goodbye hoods.
And finally, but certainly not least, goodbye to the 30-minute self-psych in the car before putting on all of the soggy, cold items listed above.
We won’t miss you.
But really, the best thing about spring is that, in our opinion, it’s the best time to learn to surf in Cornwall. The beaches are quieter, storm season is over (thank mother nature), and the water is warming up. Learn to surf in spring and you’ve basically hit the jackpot.
Now don’t get me wrong. Newquay is epic in the summer. But there’s something just that little bit more special about surfing in spring. We’re all for sharing and all that, but there’s something extra magical about surfing at Fistral Beach and having what feels like endless waves to yourself.
And for families or first-timers, that quieter line-up makes all the difference. In the beginning, 90% of surfing is confidence. Something as simple as knowing you’re not going to get hit by another board, or accidentally hit someone with yours (it happens), gives you that little extra boost to properly relax and get stuck in.
Spring waves at Fistral are so much gentler than winter swells. They give you time to think, slow everything down and really nail those basics.
And honestly, it all starts with that first lesson. Get the foundations right and everything else becomes a whole lot easier.
Spring won’t stay quiet forever. Lock in your lesson at Fistral and start your surfing journey the right way.
